Allstate reported the top 200 safest cities to drive in based on the number of accidents, fatalities and climate conditions that typically result in extra caution and slower speeds. Their results also identified the leading cause of car crashes - hard braking. Hard braking is when a driver slows down at a rate of 8 miles per hour (mph), or more, within the elapsed time parameter of 1 second. According to Allstate,

“Hard braking occurs when vehicles follow each other closely together… driver's experience 16 hard brake encounters within every 1,000 miles of driving.”
