According to cumulative data from the last 5 years, drivers should be extra careful at the following trouble spots in Hernando

Mariner Boulevard and County Line Road.  State Road 50 remains one of the most dangerous thoroughfares for traffic accidents in Hernando County.  In fact, 3 of the 4 most car crash intensive areas are along State Road 50, and Mariner is easily the most dangerous Hernando County road as it is cited in 3 of worst 5 most dangerous intersections for motorist wrecks.

Spring Hill Car Accident Lawyers – Lowman Law Firm

Spring Hill Fire Chief Mike Rampino says the fire department responds to thousands of automobile accidents per year.  They responded to around 117 crashes at two intersections alone – Mariner and County Line and Mariner and Northcliffe Boulevard.

Less congested roads are also of concern.

Two dangerous rural Hernando highway intersections are Shoal Line and Osowaw boulevards and Powell and Emerson roads, where there were a combined total of 30 traffic accidents and three fatalities in 2009, according to FDOT.

But the news isn’t all bad.

Rampino says that conditions have improved in Hernando County because the Florida Department of Transportation has added up-to-date technology and added life-saving turn lanes.  Since 2006, statistics reflect that Hernando roads have become moderately safer, improving 1,758 accidents that year to 1,698 in 2007, 1,493 in 2008 and 1,424 in 2009.  It’s a positive progression, but leaves room for improvement.

Traffic fatalities increased from 33 in 2006 to 40 in 2007, the highest total during the past five years. That number decreased over the next two years to 37 and 31, respectively.  Barring population increase statistics and other factors, Hernando County ranks 28th on the list of most dangerous counties in Florida.

Without taking into account population growth or other mitigating factors, Hernando ranks 28 out of 67 on the list of most dangerous counties in the state in terms of traffic crashes, according to FHP.

Both driver education and technological advances are two factors which seem to positively impact automobile accident and fatality statistics.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office reported a 6 percent decrease in traffic crashes from 2008 to 2009.

As reported in an article at TBO.com, "As far as proactive measures go, we do saturation patrols in the high-traffic areas and have even used the traffic sign boards on main thoroughfares to make drivers aware of congested areas and traffic enforcement programs," said Sgt. Donna Black, a sheriff's spokeswoman.
