Uninsured_Motorist_Coverage

New Hampshire is the only state in the country that doesn't require drivers to carry car insurance. Despite this, many people on the road drive without it. Yes, it's scary, and yes, you should be worried.

Do what you can to protect yourself from uninsured drivers. Consider adding uninsured motorist coverage to your vehicle policy.

What is Uninsured Motorist Coverage?

Uninsured Motorist coverage, or UM, is coverage on your policy that protects you against drivers who hit you who are also uninsured. Depending on your state, there are requirements for your car insurance policy that are mandated by law (Florida does not require you to have UM on your policy).

If you don't have UM and you're involved in an accident in which the other driver doesn't have insurance, you have to pay. You have to pick up the slack, regardless of whether you caused the crash.

One way to avoiding paying out of pocket is to add UM to your policy. This will cover your expenses when someone else crashes into you and they don't have insurance. You may not think you need it now, but you never know when you will.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage in Florida

In 2014, Florida ranked only behind California in the number of uninsured drivers within a state. Florida had 3.2 million uninsured drivers, slightly less than California at 4.1 million. If you live in Florida, you can't take any chances.

In 2016, 306 drivers in Citrus County, Florida were cited for driving without proof of insurance. That may not seem like a lot, but that's only the number of people who were caught. You don't want to take a gamble when you drive around in the Sunshine State.

Don't Underestimate Uninsured Motorist Coverage

You can't prevent all car accidents, but you can prepare for them. When they happen, and the person at fault is uninsured, you could be in deep financial trouble. If you have an uninsured motorist policy in place, you won't have that issue.

In Washington D.C. and 22 states, drivers are legally required to carry uninsured motorist coverage. This protects everyone involved, and mitigates the damages to those who are left in the aftermath of an uninsured driver crash.
