Fatal Brooksville Auto Accident

On Tuesday, May 8th, Florida State Troopers arrested a woman allegedly involved in a fatal accident that happened back in November, 2011. After an investigation, she was charged with DUI Manslaughter and transported from her home to the Hernando County jail. According to Tony Holt of Hernando Today, “The victim in the crash was Steven Thompson, 28, of Dade City, who was an employee of a Leesburg construction company. He was working at a construction site near the corner of Spring Park Way when he was struck by a pickup driven by Karen Macchione, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Macchione, 45, of 15158 Highfield Road in Brooksville, failed to merge, struck a construction barrel and then plowed into Thompson, troopers said.
Thompson was taken by ambulance to Spring Hill Regional Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.”
After the State Attorney’s office reviewed the toxicology reports and other evidence, they then saw fit to charge the driver with DUI manslaughter.
Holt goes on to note,
“The closed investigation on Thompson's death means the total number of 2011 homicides in Hernando was raised to 11 – the highest total for the county in 18 years. Troopers are also investigating a fatal accident that occurred in the same vicinity less than four months earlier. An elderly woman who was crossing Spring Hill along a crosswalk was struck down by a speeding motorcycle the morning of July 28, according to FHP. The motorcyclist, James Paul Conaty, 30, had three previous DUI-related arrests on his record, according to public records. The evidence in that case is still being evaluated, according to FHP.”
